Goal and Background
This lab was designed to introduce and work on skill in seven different areas.
1) Delineating a study area from a larger satellite image.
2) Demonstrate how spatial resolution of images can be optimized for visual interpretations.
3) Introduce radiometric enhancement techniques.
4) Linking a satellite image to Google Earth.
5) Introduce various methods of resampling satellite images.
6) Explore Image Mosaic.
7) Explore binary change detection with the use of simple graphical modeling.
Introduciton and use of these skills help with understanding and working on image preprocessing and image enhancements.
Methods
The first of the lab was about Image Subsetting. This was done in one of two ways, Inquire Box or Area of Interest. The first second image found below in the results was of a Inquire Box done on a larger image of Western Wisconsin. It shows the greater Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls area. The second image subset was done by creating an Area of Interest shapfile. The shapefiles used were of Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls counties.
The next sections 2-5 covered different image enhancing and image viewing options such as pansharpening, haze reduction and linking Erdas to Google Earth to help identify objects in images.
Part six delt with Image Mosaic through two options, Mosaic Express and Mosaic Pro. Mosaic Express image can be seen below as Mosaic One. It is a quick way of joining two satellite images together though there is a clear difference between the two images where they were joined. The second image was done by Mosaic Pro which takes greater amounts of time and effort to complete but creates a far superior image. It can be seen below in the results as Mosaic Two.
The final part of the lab was Binary Change Detection. For this part two images were looked at to find the differences between them. Once the changes had been found they were mapped out using ArcMap and can be seen below in the results as Change Map.
